Cancer incidence is on the rise, propelled by ageing societies, commercial interests, and unhealthy lifestyles. Currently, one in five men and one in six women will be diagnosed with cancer. New global cancer data suggests that the global cancer burden has risen to 18.1 million cases and 9.6 million cancer deaths. In 2018, about 2.1 million new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed worldwide. Predictions suggest that by 2030, 13 million people will die from cancer each year.

A woman’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is around 1 in 8 (12%).

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimate that one-in-five men and one-in-six women worldwide will develop cancer over the course of their lifetime.

In Mauritius breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and it remains the most common cause of cancer-related death. The estimated number of new breast cancer cases diagnosed is over 600 every year.

The surgical treatment of choice in Mauritius tends to be mastectomy (removal of the whole breast). In developed countries, emphasis is placed on breast conservation surgery (lumpectomy), in appropriate cases, followed by a short course of radiotherapy.
